DELUXE COFFEEWORKS

Deluxe was started in April 2009 by Carl Wessel and Judd Nicolay. Judd had worked in coffee for many years in his home country of New Zealand and recognised the need for and lack of good coffee in Cape Town. Carl co-owned a prominent production company and was looking for a change of pace from the demands of the film industry. They met in a Cape Town bar at the time where Judd was looking for a partner and a few weeks later Carl emptied his bank account and they bought a 2nd hand roaster which they installed in Carl’s backyard.

Around 6 months later they opened their first shop at 25 Church street in the heart of the Cape Town CDB complete with the in-house 5kg roaster. Along the way were joined by investor Steve Gray. They expanded to larger premises and opened additional shops in the City Bowl, Stellenbosch, Namibia and most recently London.

GARRETH VAN EYSSEN

The man behind the Deluxe roaster is Garreth van Eyssen. As an accomplished guitarist and bassist, Garreth’s natural habitat was the Punk music scene in Cape Town where he even had a stint as a lead singer. When he wasn’t dabbling in music he could be found hanging out at the counter at Deluxe’s first Church Street store. One day, the team found themselves short-staffed and in need of another set of hands. The instructions were simple, “Just don’t hire anyone with green hair or anything.” There sat Garreth, donning the most magnificent green mohawk man has ever seen. What can we say? We’ve never stuck to the rules.

Garreth got the job and has been an integral part of the Deluxe team ever since, working his butt off as a barista while learning the roasting ropes from Judd and the team before officially taking on the role as dedicated Deluxe Roaster in 2013.
