GEGROND COFFEE ROASTING

Like all good ideas it started over a drink. What made Gegrond a great idea was the fact that the drink was coffee.

Pieter Conradie and Frederik Dreyer were inspired to start Gegrond after trying Winston Thomas’s barista comp coffee on a V60 after a trail run in Rademeyers in 2018. The dream was realised as Gegrond was founded in 2019, and Leendert Dreyer who currently heads up roasting, later joined the team in March 2020. Together their aim has been to make exceptional coffee accessible to everyone.

It did not take long for this roastery to be up there with the best claiming a first place podium in “A Shot In The Dark 2021” which is South Africa’s only roasting competition.

As a brand, Gegrond encapsulates being firmly rooted in your values, morals, and faith, while embracing the adventurous spirit of life and wholeheartedly pursuing its exploration.

They take pride in their “everyday friendly” coffee offering, with monthly special releases that showcase exceptional specialty for those “spoil yourself” moments. Recently, they have added single-origin bean-to-bar chocolates to their offering, believing that it will make life a little sweeter for all their fans.

LEENDERT DREYER

Leendert joined Gegrond in March 2020, just three weeks before the onset of the Covid pandemic.

Despite the challenging timing, he embraced his role wholeheartedly.

With only three weeks of roasting training from Frederik, Leendert took on the responsibility of managing all roasting operations throughout the pandemic.

Coming from an IT background, Leendert swiftly revamped our website and secured Gegrond’s first online sale during the Covid crisis. His quick action allowed Gegrond to pivot its focus from office clientele, which was no longer viable, to serving home consumers.

Leendert quickly became the backbone of Gegrond, handling roasting, packing, shipping, and IT duties with finesse.
